Choose from seven specialist PhD programmes to advance knowledge in your chosen field.

Common programme structure

LBS offers seven PhD programmes designed and delivered by each of the School's academic departments (subject areas). These PhD programmes follow a common structure, beginning with advanced coursework and progressing to original, independent research. LBS faculty including a dedicated supervisor from your chosen subject area help acquire the knowledge and capabilities necessary to make an original and impactful contribution in your field.

  • Years 1–2: Coursework, research training and specialist study  
  • Years 2–3: Research proposal and progression to doctoral research  
  • Years 3–5 (or 6): Independent research and thesis  
  • Final stage: Thesis defence, award of the PhD degree and job market.

Subject areas

Each programme offers specialist expertise, close collaboration with world-leading faculty and the opportunity to contribute original research within your chosen discipline. To assess fit with your research interests, we strongly advise reviewing the recent publications and current research work of that subject area’s core faculty (Assistant, Associate and Full Professors) and PhD students.
