Why food insecurity is a workplace issue

12 August 2026

Did you know that up to one in four people globally experience food insecurity?

In this video, Ussama Khan, Assistant Professor of Organisational Behaviour at London Business School, explores how food insecurity affects employees' wellbeing and performance at work.

Drawing on his research, Ussama explains how uncertainty about access to food increases workplace anxiety, reducing task performance, engagement and helping behaviours towards colleagues. He also shares findings from a field study in Pakistan, where providing food support significantly reduced anxiety and improved workplace outcomes.

The findings highlight why food insecurity is not only a humanitarian challenge, but also an important issue for organisations and leaders to address.
