Professor Richard Portes is a leading expert in international macroeconomics and finance, with current research focusing on macroprudential regulation including crypto currencies and decentralised finance, safe assets, global imbalances, currency and asset composition of central bank reserves, and the international role of currencies. His work encompasses sovereign borrowing and debt, European monetary issues, European financial markets, and international capital flows.
Professor Portes teaches European Financial Markets and Global Experiences in Hong Kong (on its role as the financial hub of Asia) and Boston-New York (on asset management). He has held the inaugural Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa Chair at the European University Institute (2014-2017) and served as Distinguished Global Visiting Professor at the Haas Business School, UC Berkeley, and Joel Stern Visiting Professor of International Finance at Columbia Business School. Professor Portes is Founder and Honorary President of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and Co-Founder of Economic Policy journal. He is an elected Fellow of the Econometric Society and of the British Academy, a founder member of the Bellagio Group on the International Economy and the Euro50 Group and holds three honorary doctorates. A Rhodes Scholar and Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, he was decorated CBE in the 2003 New Year's Honours.
