• Do I have to attend every session?

• If my programme starts on Sunday evening, do I need to attend?

  Yes, you must attend the opening session. It is an essential introduction to your programme themes and a foundation for the rest of the week.

• What's your cancellation policy?

  To avoid a cancellation or transfer fee, we must receive your cancellation, in writing, no less than six weeks before the programme starts.

Travelling to LBS

• Which is the best airport to fly to?

  The most convenient airport is London Heathrow.

• How do I get from the Airport to London Business School?
  • Heathrow: take the Heathrow Express to Paddington station, then take a taxi or use the Underground.
  • Gatwick: take the Gatwick Express to Victoria station, then take a taxi or use the Underground.
  • Stansted: take the Stansted Express to Liverpool Street station, then take a taxi or use the Underground.
  • City Airport: take a taxi or use the DLR and the underground.
• Can I hire a car to take me to and from the airport?

  Transfers to and from the airport are the responsibility of the individual.

• Where is the nearest London Underground Station?

  Baker Street Station, on the Bakerloo, Jubilee, Metropolitan, Circle and Hammersmith & City Lines, is a 5-minute walk from London Business School. For further instructions, see our maps.

Accommodation

• Where will I be staying?

  Accommodation is organised for participants who are on our General Management residential programmes (see programme pages). If you are not on a General Management programme, local hotels near to the campus offer preferential rates and we can assist you with this should you need it.

• Is there an induction programme at the start of the academic year?

  Some students are expected to attend a four week maths refresher or pre-programme course in September (depending on the subject area). All students will be required to attend a 3-day orientation in the first month of the programme, giving you the chance to meet faculty, your first year supervisor and other PhD students. You'll also receive training and induction in London Business School's facilities and services.

• Is there funding available for the PhD Programme?

  All students offered a place on the PhD programme receive full funding, which includes a tax-free stipend (£23,500 per year) guaranteed for five years and a tuition fee waiver.

  
  
• Do I need to make contact with faculty members before I submit an application?

  No, you do not need to contact faculty members before you make an application. Decisions on supervisors are only made after the first year in the programme, so you will have plenty of time to get to know faculty. We do encourage you to read the faculty profiles on our website to see if faculty at LBS have research interests relevant to what you wish to do.

  
  
• How long does it take to complete the PhD programme?

  Students complete the programme within five - six years.

  
  
• When does the academic year start?

  The academic year starts in October. The year is divided into three terms (AUT, SPR and SUM), lasting 10 weeks each. Some new students may also need to attend a pre-sessional course in September.

  
  
  
• I understand I have to provide teaching assistance and/or research assistance. How much should I expect to do?

  All students must work as teaching or research assistants for 20 days (160 hours) a year in years 2, 3 and 4 of the programme. At least 10 days (80 hours) should be of teaching assistance (and the other 10 days could be research assistance, depending on each subject area’s preference). This is seen as a valuable part of your training.

  
  

• Can I do the programme on a part-time basis or through distance learning?

  The programme is run on a full-time basis only and students are expected to live in London.

  
  
• Are there fees for the PhD programme?

  There is a tuition fee waiver for all committed students.

  
  
• What is the deadline for applications?

  Your application needs to reach us by 8th December. Make sure you have allowed enough time for your GMAT and/or other scores to be processed. We suggest you take any tests (and request for the results to be sent to us) before 27th October.

  
  
• I have done the first two years of my PhD but now need to relocate. Is it possible to transfer to London Business School?

  We do not offer transfers. You may be admitted to the programme from year one and apply for exemption from courses already taken. In such cases students will be required to pass a waiver examination. No more than three course waivers are permitted.

• I have a Masters from LSE. Do I still need to submit a GMAT or a GRE score?

  Yes, you must. We expect all applicants to submit a GRE or GMAT score before their application can be considered. Your score is valid for up to five years.

  Yes, we really encourage companies from across all sectors to get involved in further professional development of our students.

  Please note however that involvement with clubs should be limited to career or technical interview skills development. Direct recruitment (e.g. informing students of specific jobs, interviewing of candidates etc.) should be managed through Career Centre.

• Can my company come onto campus to meet students one-to-one?

  Yes, Career Centre offers firms opportunities to hold informal events to meet students for discussions.

  Employers are able to search both students and alumni CVs on separate systems which need to be logged into separately:

• How do you search students CVs?

  Once you have registered as a recruiter and received your log in details you can then search for CVs:

  • Log into Career Central
  • To search students' CVs, use the 'CV Search' tab at the top of the screen.

• How do I post a job online on Career Central (for current students)?

  Once you have registered as a recruiter and received your login details, you can then post suitable roles to our student community.

  Firstly, you need to decide whether you will be interviewing for this role on campus or not.

  If the answer is no - select the 'post jobs and interview off campus' tab. Then,

  • Click 'Post jobs + Interview off campus' on the top menu
  • Click 'Add New'
  • Fill in the form and press Submit
  • The Career Centre team will be notified of your request and if appropriate approve your job posting (which will make it viewable to candidates).

  If the answer is yes - select the 'post jobs and interview on campus' tab. Then:

  • Click 'Post jobs + Interview on campus' on the top menu
  • Scroll down and click 'Request a Schedule'
  • Fill in the form with as much information as is known at the time of posting the job (approx. date of interview, approx. length of interview etc…)
  • The Career Centre team will then be notified of your request and assign your interviews with a schedule date
  • You will be notified when your request has been approved
  • One notified, click on 'Attach Position' (aka 'post your job') under 'Options'
  • Please select 'Copy/Create A New Position'
  • After filling in the form press 'Save & Finish'
  • Your whole schedule (date + job) will then be approved by a member of the Career Centre team.

• Can I use my own system to schedule interviews?

  Career Central is a valuable tool our students are familiar with; however, it is possible for you to use your own system for scheduling students.

• Can my company host interviews off campus?

  It is possible to host interviews off-campus. Please discuss proposed dates for interview with the appropriate Sector Manager in order to avoid conflicts with other scheduled interviews.

  
  
• What is included in on campus interviews?

  Companies interviewing on campus will have a room assigned by Career Centre staff (including a hospitality room). Refreshments are provided and lunches available upon request.

• How can I organise a company presentation on campus?

  Campus presentations involve one or several speakers from a company presenting to a room of students for up to 45 minutes, followed by a catered networking event. It is important to bring enough staff to present to and talk with students.

• What is the standard presentation format?

  Campus presentations involve one or several speakers from a company presenting to a room of students for up to 45 minutes, followed by a catered networking event. It is important to bring enough staff to present to and talk with students.

  
  
• What times can I present to students?

  Permanent recruitment presentations start in September and internship recruitment presentations start in January. For specific dates please refer to our full recruitment calendar.

  Presentations are typically held:

  • Monday - Friday: 11:15 - 12:45
  • Thursday: 18:45
  • Friday: 15:45
• How many students will attend my presentation?

  Attendees vary dependent on the firm. In the past we have hosted presentations for 25 to 150 students.

  
  
• Can we do presentations off campus?

  Of course, it is possible, however holding your presentation off-campus may impact on the number of students able to attend.

  Please discuss your proposed dates with the appropriate Sector Manager in order to avoid conflicts with other presentations.
