London Business School executive director says MBA location matters

Location really does matter when considering whether to study an MBA programme at home or abroad, according to Gareth Howells, Executive Director, MBA and MiF, London Business School.

Speaking to City A.M. in an article published today, Mr Howells told candidates’ considering an MBA that location is the most important choice they will make.

“Location really does matter,” says Howells.

When considering where to go to business school, Howells suggests prospective MBAs focus on three things.

“First, does the institution you’re considering have good access to business? Being able to put into practice what you’re learning is vital.”

Second, candidates should think carefully about their post-MBA aspirations, says Howells. “Think about the industry you want to be in. Is it well-represented in that location and will recruiters come onto campus? If you’re targeting a career in finance, an economic hub like London, New York or Hong Kong might fit the bill. If it’s the entertainment industry, the West Coast of the US could be the place.”

Finally, Howells says candidates should head for a “melting pot” environment.

“Future employers are increasingly concerned with life experience – openness and a willingness to live and work in an environment with many different cultures can be a real advantage.”
