LBS’ Hélène Rey joins Bank for International Settlements

Professor Hélène Rey is appointed Economic Adviser and Head of Monetary and Economic Department at Bank for International Settlements

Hélène Rey, Lord Bagri Professor of Economics at London Business School, has been appointed as Economic Adviser and Head of Monetary and Economic Department of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). Professor Rey will lead the Bank’s economics work and join its Executive Committee from September 2026.

The Monetary and Economic Department undertakes research and analysis on policy issues of concern to central banks, supports BIS committees, and organises key meetings of senior central bankers.

Professor Rey says: “I am delighted to take on this important role at such a critical juncture for the world economy and the international monetary and financial system. The BIS is a key institution for monetary and financial stability and international policy cooperation.”

Professor Rey is the Lord Raj Bagri Professor of Economics at London Business School, a position to which she was appointed in 2016. In addition, she is a Vice President at the Centre for Economic Policy Research and was President of the European Economic Association in 2025. She currently serves on its Board. Her research focuses on trade and financial imbalances, financial crises and the organisation of the international monetary system. She is a foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the British Academy and a member of the Group of Thirty.

Professor Rey who was a member of the French macro prudential and micro prudential authorities, holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the London School of Economics and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris, as well as degrees from Stanford University and the École Nationale de la Statistique et de l'Administration Économique.

She will succeed Hyun Song Shin when he retires on 31 August 2026 and will join the Executive Committee of the BIS. Professor Rey will remain a professor of London Business School on leave to the BIS.
