He joined the Bank of Italy's Research Department in 1985, becoming head of its Monetary and Financial Division in 1999. From 2007 to 2011 he headed the Economic Outlook and Monetary Policy Department. In July 2011, he became Managing Director with the task of coordinating the Bank's activities relating to the Eurosystem and to financial stability. From 2010 to 2012, he chaired the editorial committee of the Bank of Italy's Financial Stability Report.

He is a member of the Società Italiana degli Economisti, the American Finance Association and the American Economic Association. In 2006 he was awarded the 'Premio Giornalistico Internazionale Santa Margherita Ligure per l'Economia' as the best writer on economics.

The head of state, Sergio Mattarella, will need to approve the selection before Panetta can take up his role once present incumbent Ignazio Visco’s second and final term comes to a close at the end of October.

Commenting on Dr Panetta’s appointment, Lucrezia Reichlin, Professor of Economics at London Business School, said: “Fabio is a very seasoned central banker who has showed leadership and judgement during difficult times. He is a great and distinguished member of LBS’s alumni community.”

LBS's Professor Richard Portes added his thoughts with the following comments: "Fabio Panetta could have been a top academic. Instead, to the social good, he became a top central banker. He is very smart, with a wide-ranging, very balanced perspective. Most recently, he has been leading the European Central Bank work on digital currency and has developed a well considered position on crypto-currency. Fabio will be an articulate and influential force in his new role as Bank of Italy governor."
