Grain subsidies shift purchasing decisions
Ideas for India features research co-authored by LBS Professor Kamalini Ramdas

New research examining the effects of grain subsidies by London Business School’s Deloitte Chair in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Professor Kamalini Ramdas, has been featured by policy and economics portal, Ideas for India.
The article ‘Grain subsidies and junk food purchases among low-income individuals’, co-authored with Ali Aouad (MIT Sloan School of Management) and Alp Sungu (Wharton School), details the findings of a study conducted in a low-income community in Mumbai. Its authors sought to objectively observe how grain subsidies altered recipients’ purchasing decisions using the novel use of point-of-sale scanners.
They found that the provision of grain subsidies reduced the purchase of junk foods and increased the purchases of spices and accompaniments. The effect was most pronounced among households with children.
