London Business School launches first UAE International Assignment

Executive MBAs meet best minds in UAE business

London Business School Executive MBA (EMBA) students will have the opportunity to learn from some of the UAE’s brightest business minds as they meet policy makers, practitioners and industry experts in Dubai and Abu Dhabi this week as part of the school’s inaugural International Assignment in the region.

65 students studying at the School’s London campus and Dubai Centre will visit the region for a week-long assignment. Through a combination of guest lectures, site and company visits and panels, the International Assignment will allow students to apply classroom theory to live business situations and the specific challenges executives face in the UAE and wider Middle East region.

The theme of the assignment is “Creating a Modern City”. It has been designed to explore the economic, business and social development of Dubai and Abu Dhabi and its possible future direction. Students will have the opportunity to learn from top executives at prominent regional organisations such as Mubadala, Emirates Airline, Dubai Ports World, Majid Al Futtaim Group, Dubai Financial Services Authority, Dubai Chamber of Commerce, Falcon Associates and twofour54. These company visits have been themed around the role key sectors in the UAE have played in developing the economy.

Andrew Scott, Professor of Economics and Deputy Dean (Programmes), who is teaching on the UAE International Assignment this year, said: “Dubai and Abu Dhabi have been witnessing extraordinary rates of growth and development over recent decades and are positioned as key global business hubs. As economic geography is shifting, the UAE finds itself literally at the centre of the world economy. This trend will only grow over the next few years, particularly in the run up to major events such as the World Expo in 2020, as more organisations and professionals turn towards this region to take advantage of the tremendous growth opportunities it has to offer.”

Amelia Whitelaw, Director, Global Experiences, London Business School, said: “London Business School is committed to growing the region’s business talent, offering executives a world-class education which is pivotal to business growth in the UAE and the wider Middle East. Launching the International Assignment in the UAE will allow our students to further enhance their understanding of the region’s business culture and gain important insights into the lessons Dubai and Abu Dhabi can provide for other cities in advanced and emerging economies.”

London Business School has been successfully running its International Assignments since the 1990s, providing students with a unique opportunity to expand their business experience, widen their global network, and gain insights from leaders in influential economies. The current International Assignment portfolio offering includes Silicon Valley, Cape Town, Moscow, Buenos Aires, Beijing and the UAE.

The International Assignment has now been introduced in the UAE, where the School’s Dubai Centre has been based at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) since 2007.

Aimed at experienced professionals from across the region with an average of ten years’ work experience, the EMBA in Dubai allows regional executives the opportunity to study for a London Business School MBA, without disruption to their lives or careers, but with the guarantee of a world-class education.
