London Business School is delighted to announce that Professor Elias Papaioannou has been elected by members of the European Economic Association (EEA) as its next Vice-President, positioning him to serve as President-Elect in 2027 and President in 2028.

This appointment underscores the esteem in which Elias is held by the European economics community. It also continues the tradition of strong LBS representation in leading European academic organisations, following the current presidency of Professor Hélène Rey, whose tenure has brought global attention to the EEA’s work on international macroeconomics and financial stability.

Professor Papaioannou, who holds the Alexander Knaster Chair in Economics at LBS and co-directs the Wheeler Institute for Business and Development, is widely recognised for his research in international finance, political economy, economic history, growth, and development. Elias, a CEPR Research Fellow, also serves as a Managing Co-Editor of the Review of Economic Studies, one of economics' most prestigious scholarly journals.

Elias’s distinguished career spans academic and policy institutions. Following his doctorate at LBS, he worked at the European Central Bank, held faculty positions at Dartmouth College and Harvard University, and was the Hal Varian Visiting Professor at MIT. He has received numerous accolades, including election as a Fellow of the British Academy (2024), the European Investment Bank Young Economist Award (2013), and an ERC Consolidator Grant for research on African economic history (2018).

Speaking about his appointment, Professor Papaioannou said: "I am deeply humbled by this recognition. I am sincerely thankful to my colleagues across Europe, who entrusted me with their vote. This appointment would not have been possible without the support of the School and the Economics Subject Area. My ambition is to help raise the profile of the Association and economics in European policymaking, which is needed more than ever , given the ongoing geopolitical tensions."

LBS warmly congratulates Elias on this prestigious appointment. His leadership promises to strengthen the EEA’s influence across Europe and further highlight the School’s global impact in economics research and policy.
