Hélène Rey, Lord Raj Bagri Professor of Economics and Academic Director, AQR Institute of Asset Management, London Business School, has received funding on a competitive basis from the European Research Council (ERC).

The grant, which amounts to £1.4m (€1.8m), has been awarded for a four–year research programme on international finance and monetary policy.

Hélène Rey, Lord Raj Bagri Professor of Economics, London Business School, says: “I am fascinated by a number of important questions at the intersection of international finance and monetary economics. What are the transmission channels of monetary policy and how are they affected by large financial flows? How do models featuring heterogeneity among investors or intermediaries help us to understand fluctuations in asset prices and in systemic risk? I am really looking forward to working intensively on these issues in the next four years, and I am very grateful to the ERC for this.”

Hélène’s research will focus on the effect of different exchange rate regimes and on the implications of large cross-border financial flows for monetary policy transmission and macroeconomic models with heterogeneous financial intermediaries.

The award was made under the ERC's Advanced Grant Scheme. Close to 2000 applications across all fields were submitted to the ERC under the Advanced Grant Call, and the ERC funds only 14.2% of these proposals.

This is the second of two awards for Hélène. In 2008 she was the first recipient at the School to receive funding under the ERC Starting Grant Scheme.

The ERC's main aim is to stimulate scientific excellence by supporting and encouraging the very best and truly creative scientists, scholars and engineers to be adventurous and take risks in their research.

Hélène is an Academic Director of the AQR Institute of Asset Management at LBS and a member of the Board of the French macroprudential authority. She is also a CEPR Research Fellow, NBER Research Associate and an elected Fellow of the British Academy, of the Econometric Society, of the European Economic Association and an elected Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
