Gary Dushnitsky wins Strategic Management Society’s emerging scholar award

A London Business School Associate Professor has won a leading scholarship prize for his "crucial" and "influential" research on strategic management and entrepreneurship.

Gary Dushnitsky, Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the School, was named the Strategic Management Society's (SMS) Emerging Scholar recipient for 2013.

The annual award, recognises a relatively young or new scholar who displays exemplary scholarship that promises to have an impact on future strategic management practice.

Dr Dushnitsky, who is also Academic Director of the Deloitte Institute of Innovation & Entrepreneurship at London Business School, was awarded the accolade for his work on the economics of entrepreneurship and innovation.

His diverse body of research looks at today's evolving landscape of entrepreneurial finance, delving into the shifting interactions between business-people and investors set against a backdrop of crowd-funding, venture capital, and corporate entrepreneurship.

Gary's work has been published in leading, peer-reviewed journals, and his dissertation was awarded best dissertation prizes by three divisions of the Academy of Management. He is a senior editor at the Organization Science and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and advises policy makers as well as many leading businesses on corporate venturing.

Those nominating Gary for the prize spoke of the importance of his research. "He is the world authority on corporate venture capital programs and is undertaking important research exploring the strategic implications of open innovation and markets for innovation," one said.

Asked what advice he had for new scholars looking to establish themselves as leading thinkers in their fields, Gary said he thought a sense of curiosity was an important attribute.

"By curiosity, I refer to the willingness to challenges existing orthodoxies, question why do certain things exist, and observe changes to the world around us," he said.

Gary will formally receive the prize at the SMS' 33rd Annual International Conference in Atlanta, US, at the end of September.
