Dr Ioannou achieves record number of citations
LBS's leading voice on sustainability strategy and corporate responsibility records a citation count of 13,000 on Google Scholar

A world leading voice on sustainability strategy and corporate responsibility Dr Ioannis Ioannou has achieved a Google Scholar citation count of 13,000.
Google Scholar (GS) is a web-based academic search engine, that catalogues between 2 and 100m records of both academic and ‘grey literature’ (articles not formally published by commercial academic publishers).
As a leading expert in sustainability leadership and corporate responsibility, Dr Ioannou's research provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities organisations encounter when developing sustainable business models. His award-winning academic work on strategic Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) integration, coupled with his focus on the investment community and financial markets, has established him as a thought leader in the field.
Deeply involved in the world of practice, Ioannis' expertise has secured him positions on various advisory boards, such as the Sustainability Advisory Panel of Merck KGaA, the ESG Advisory Board of the DWS Group, and as a member of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Expert Network, where he offers expert guidance on Sustainable Development.
Speaking about his recent accomplishment, Dr Ioannou said that he believed it owed more to collective effort than individual success.
“My Google Scholar citation count has surpassed 13,000, a number that speaks volumes not about me, but about the incredible community I am part of,” he said.
“First and foremost, my heartfelt thanks go out to all my advisors and mentors, co-authors and collaborators as well as my academic home for the last 15 or so years, London Business School. Your insights, expertise, and partnership have been the backbone of our shared achievements. To the broader academic community that has warmly embraced our work, I am deeply grateful. Your engagement has been instrumental in refining and advancing our collective understanding. I am equally thankful for the broader community's involvement. To the students, managers, practitioners, and policymakers all around the world who have applied our research, provided feedback, and sparked new ideas: your contributions are also invaluable.”
Focusing on corporate sustainability has never been a "strategic" career choice, added Ioannou. “It's been a profound journey of purpose stemming from a deep-seated belief in the critical importance of these issues. Being an academic in this field is a privilege that allows me to engage in work that is not just intellectually stimulating but also morally and ethically compelling. As a scholar, I have always valued academic debate and the clash of ideas. Critiques, feedback, and rejections are vital components of scientific progress. They guide us in our quest for truth, ensuring that our journey is rooted in ethical and moral norms.”
