A cross-section of cultures and industries
“Prior to Sloan I had enjoyed a substantial career working in the finance industry with a number of Spanish banks.”
“As my career progressed, however, I became increasingly curious about leadership, the different theories surrounding it, and the true psychology behind it. I started looking at different business programmes and found Sloan to be a perfect fit. I wanted a full-time programme created specifically for people with a more senior level of experience and I was attracted by the faculty focus on leadership and strategy. London Business School’s reputation is also very strong in Italy and being able to study in the centre of such a fabulous city was the icing on the cake.”
“One of the real value-adds of Sloan, and something I didn’t originally anticipate is the genuine enrichment and varied perspectives I’ve gained studying alongside people from 23 different nationalities. The cross-section of cultures, professional experiences and industries is just totally unique. While I was on international assignment in São Paulo with the entire class, I found this opportunity to bond and learn from each other amazing. We met with top global companies like Santander, government agencies and local alumni and entrepreneurs. We also looked at some fascinating topics, including the environmental impact of different industries, the measures the Brazilian government is adopting to limit this, and the importance of commodities to Brazil’s economic growth.”
Integrating family
“Like many Sloans, I’m already at a point in my life where my own family is well established. I had been working for a brief period in London when the programme started, so I had also moved my wife and daughter here with me. We have had some great tips from other students and alumni, which has helped lessen any culture shock, and London is such a cosmopolitan city that integrating has been relatively easy. My daughter has settled in well at an international school and is benefiting from a wonderful life experience; in addition, because so many of my classmates are in a similar situation, we’ve formed some very close family friendships. My wife has spent time studying English, and if, as I hope, I remain in London after the programme, she will have the opportunity to work here as well.”
An unbeatable network
“The first half of the programme has been very demanding, but I’m really excited about my next six months on campus. I’m particularly looking forward to upcoming conferences like social media in business, an area where I believe there is a lot of untapped potential, and I’m planning to use every tool at my disposal to take my career in a different direction. One option is to start my own business, so the greater level of self-awareness that Sloan is giving me will be really important. I’m looking at electives that will give me the right toolkit (such as Financing the Entrepreneurial Business) and I’m utilising faculty contacts in areas such as strategy and supply chain. At present I have a business idea in mind relating to the food industry – after all, coming from Italy, food is very important to me! Thanks to Sloan, I know that whatever I end up doing, I will have an unbeatable network for the future.”
