Sergei Guriev

Dean; Professor of Economics

Professor Sergei Guriev is an economist whose research focuses on political economics, the economics of development and transition, contract theory, corporate governance, and labour mobility. His work examines how institutions shape economic outcomes and how political systems influence economic behaviour, with particular attention to emerging markets and economies in transition. He has published extensively in leading academic journals and is the author of Spin Dictators: The Changing Face of Tyranny in the 21st Century, which has been translated into thirteen languages and received significant international recognition.

Before joining London Business School as Dean in August 2024, he was a tenured professor of economics at Sciences Po in Paris, where he also served as Provost from 2022 to 2024. He was Chief Economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development from 2016 to 2019 and Rector of the New Economic School in Moscow from 2004 to 2013.

Professor Guriev is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research, a Member of the Group of Thirty, a Global Member of the Trilateral Commission, a Senior Member of the Institut Universitaire de France, and an Ordinary Member of Academia Europaea. He was selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2006.
