Hélène Rey elected at American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Hélène Rey one of 37 foreign honorary members
A London Business School professor has been elected to join the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Hélène Rey, Lord Raj Bagri Professor of Economics and Academic Director, AQR Asset Management Institute, London Business School joins a distinguished class of scholars, writers, scientists, artists, world business and philanthropic leaders who become honorary members of the Academy this year.
Professor Rey says: “I feel extraordinarily honoured to have been elected as a Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, whose purpose is to “cultivate every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honour, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people.”
“I share these values. It is quite humbling to go through the list of past and present foreign members, which include John Maynard Keynes, Mary Leakey, Alice Munro and Winston Churchill!”
Founded in 1780, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences is one of the country’s oldest learned societies and independent policy research centres. The Academy convenes leaders from the academic, business, and government sectors to respond to the challenges facing, and opportunities available to, the nation and the world.
Members of the 2016 class include winners of the Pulitzer Prize and the Wolf Prize; MacArthur and Guggenheim Fellowships; the Fields Medal; and the Grammy Award and National Book Award.
“It is an honour to welcome this new class of exceptional women and men as part of our distinguished membership,” said Don Randel, Chair of the Academy’s Board of Directors. “Their election affords us an invaluable opportunity to bring their expertise and knowledge to bear on some of the most significant challenges of our day. Members contribute to Academy publications and studies of science, engineering, and technology policy; global security and international affairs; the humanities, arts, and education; as well as American institutions and the public good.
The Academy elected 37 Foreign Honorary Members from 17 countries this year, including Botswana, China, Cuba, Israel, Russia, and South Africa.
