Abstract
As Sophia Bergqvist journeyed to Oporto airport through the vineyards of Northern Portugal, on her way back to London, she reflected on the future of the family business, Quinta la Rosa, which she and her father had struggled to build into a prize-winning Port producer. "Our generation seems to have worked out a balance in terms of involvement in the business. However, the next generation is likely to number eight or nine. While we could wait and see which of the children was most interested in the business, my husband Philip, a lawyer, was of the opinion that we should plan for the future and address the succession issue now."
