Abstract

Oliver Jones had just returned from his second presentation to the Managing Director of Gatwick Airport Limited (GAL). The Managing Director was still enthusiastic about Jones' proposal that Gatwick develop a new business selling its professional services to organisations outside the BAA group. Jones had been asked to prepare a detailed financial model to BAA standards projecting the new business over the next 5 years but in principle it seemed the Managing Director would back a presentation of Jones' plan to the BAA main board. Jones realised that his idea might actually happen. This excited him. Although he had originally promoted the idea principally to get noticed within BAA, as he pursued it further he became increasingly committed to the business concept. It was no longer a political game. He knew that the 5 year projections he produced would eventually provide the basis for his performance assessment. He was putting his neck on the line but was his potential reward likely to be worth he risk he would be taking?
