International assignment

The week-long international assignment allows Sloan Fellows to develop an understanding of a particular regional economy and the factors that contribute to its development and success.

The international assignment forms part of the Sloan Fellowship Global Business Environment course, a core component of the Sloan Fellowship, taught by Professor of Economics, Andrew Scott. The course focuses on how macroeconomic events exert a significant impact on the business environment, and the importance of understanding the changes brought about by these developments, their implications for different sectors, and the likely response of governments to these forces.

Professor Andrew Scott: "The international assignment is placed in the context of a macroeconomic course giving students a real opportunity not just to consider the themes of development and globalisation in the class but actually experience them and discuss the issues with businesses and organisations from around the world."

Recent trips have explored the volatile economic environment in Argentina and the new dynamics of the Chinese economy in Shanghai.

Company visits

During the international assignment, students visit a number of different companies, both national and multinational, explore concerns of local business leaders and are briefed by government representatives and resident academics.

Some of the world's leading players have welcomed Sloan Fellows to join them for in-depth company visits to discuss the key issues facing their organisation and country. Previous companies visited include: Boston Consulting Group, Cadbury, Coca Cola, HSBC, JP Morgan, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Shanghai Stock Exchange and Standard Chartered Bank.
