Innovation. Whether it is exploring the risks associated with crossing the ‘Valley of Death’ in securing early VC interest, or learning to ‘Pivot’ or ‘Bootstrap’ an investment stream, the world of innovation and securing investment has become its own world, with a language all of its own.

Today, world-leading institutions such as LBS, multinational companies and governments are involving themselves more and more in promoting the importance of practice of innovation. And in the spirit of great innovation and entrepreneurship, last month London Business School (LBS) and Management Today launched the second year of an awards programme to celebrate these important aspects of the UK economy.

Hundreds of nominations are anticipated by end of May, and the judging panel, drawn from LBS and Management Today, will be reviewing six categories which include, ‘The Masters of Reinvention Award’, the ‘The Harnessing The Winds of Change Award’, and even the ‘The George Bernard Shaw Unreasonable Person Award’.

According to Julian Birkinshaw, Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship and Academic Director of the Deloitte Institute, the awards are a celebration of “real innovation”.

"Innovation as a term can be over-used,” says Julian. “Innovation is frequently presented as almost effortless, but real innovation is messy, hard and often elusive. Nothing like what you see in the text books.”

The winners will appear in Management Today’s magazine, which has 150,000 readers, online news stories, daily bulletins and social media. They will also be featured in London Business School Review. In late June, early July a preselection will take place selecting the shortlist that will go forward to the judging committee.

To celebrate this messy, unruly process, and to recognise the individuals who make it all possible, London Business School is hosting the second Real Innovation Awards later this year. Why not encourage your favourite innovator – who is different, obstinate, or just plain ‘messy’ - to participate in the awards.

The awards ceremony will be held at LBS in November 2017.
