Book authored by LBS professors examines implications of longevity

Lynda Gratton and Andrew Scott - 482x271
The 100-Year Life by London Business School Professors Lynda Gratton and Andrew Scott has been shortlisted for the FT and McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award.

Launched earlier this year to critical acclaim, The 100-Year Life: Living and Working in an Age of Longevity, by Lynda Gratton, Professor of Management Practice, and Andrew Scott, Professor of Economics, London Business School, considers the implications of longevity for people and society.

The authors say: “Longevity is an issue that will lead to a fundamental re-design of life and work. We have been so pleased to see the messages and implications of the book capture the interest of a range of different communities. A debate is increasingly happening around this topic.

“Being shortlisted for the FT-McKinsey prize is a tremendous boost and honour. We hope it will help to further spread awareness of how we all need to change in response to greater longevity.”

According to Professors Gratton and Scott, as populations live longer, life will move from the traditional three stages – education, work and retirement – to a multi-staged life. Activity and age will become disconnected in the multi-stage life, with people likely to try different careers, take breaks, re-train and move to new cities, the authors say.

Professor Gratton, who teaches on London Business School’s MBA and Executive MBA programmes, and Professor Scott, who teaches on the EMBA Global, have been exploring the opportunities and challenges of the 100-year life with degree programme students at the school. The authors have been equipping students to recognise the age of longevity as a gift, and not a curse.

The 100-Year Life joins five other books on the shortlist this year, all of which tackle global business, economic and management issues. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in London on 22 November 2016.

Bloomsbury Publishing is currently offering a 30% discount on the book. Use code 100YEAR to order.
