PowershiftingWhile the struggle for marketplace dominance is not new, the speed with which positions change and the role that technology plays in these power shifts are modern phenomena. The challenge for organisations is to be able to leverage technology in an effective, efficient, and potent manner so as to achieve goals and objectives. An enterprise can benefit from organisational power, knowledge power, or position power. What’s key is for executives to master powershifting, the critical role played by knowledge in manipulating the relative position of an organisation within an industry through the changing of power.

Technology needs to be deployed to collect signals from the internal and external environments of the organisation, organise the signals into a meaningful form resulting in information, put information in the context of the organisation’s reality to create knowledge, and use knowledge  to inform actions and responses of the organisation. Technologies can help an organisation manage information within its bounds (for example, human resource information systems) and also manage information in the extended enterprise (for example, supply chain systems, customer support systems, etc.).
