Learning to growHe was not born in Chile or Argentina. He lost his first job because he could not speak Spanish. He hates to have a boss, but he employs 55,000 people. His chain of stores generates over $4.5 billion in revenues, yet his personal visions for growing that number are often crafted with the simplest of tools: paper and pencil. Horst Paulmann is very much the model South American entrepreneur.

Paulmann’s story is more than inspirational; it’s instructive. One can glean at least seven lessons from what Paulmann did to marshal the resources and will that created the Cencosud chain of stores.
