Richard Hytner

Adjunct Professor of Marketing

MA LLM (Cambridge), Sloan Fellowship (London)

Until setting up beta baboon in 2016, Richard, a Cambridge law graduate, was Saatchi & Saatchi’s Worldwide Deputy Chairman, heading up its global strategy and innovation practice. Working with leaders of many of Saatchi & Saatchi’s clients, Richard and his team helped them earn loyalty beyond reason among their customers and people.

Board level engagements, involving facilitation with key customers, regulators, leaders and employees, have been for executive teams led by Sir Andrew Likierman, Dean of London Business School; Ana Botin, now Chair, Grupo Santander; Richard Sexton, Global Head of PwC Assurance; Ed Forst, former CEO of Cushman & Wakefield; and Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. beta baboon has assignments with GSMA, the mobile phone industry association, PwC Assurance and Shawbrook.

At London Business School, Richard teaches on custom executive education programmes for A.T. Kearney, EY, Vodafone, Lloyds of London and Nestle, as well as on four open programmes: Leading businesses into the future; New Generation Professional Services Firms; Strategic Branding; and Market Driving Strategies. He runs an elective course on Creativity in Business. A key focus for Richard’s teaching is how, in today’s increasingly commoditised world, leaders can unearth fresh actionable customer insights; reignite their individual, team and organisational creativity; and enhance their commercial innovation.

Beyond his work for Saatchi & Saatchi, Richard co-founded the Manchester United Supporters Trust; is a trustee of Planting Promise, a sustainable educational enterprise in Sierra Leone; and a trustee of the British Heart Foundation. In 2015 he joined the Met Police Commissioner’s Management Board as a non executive adviser.

Whilst spending much of his career as CEO of creative businesses, Richard prefers leading from the shadows, the subject of his first book, Consiglieri: Leading from the Shadows, published by Profile Books. It is a celebration of the craft of leadership that supports, counsels, challenges and checks the out and out charismatic leader. His most recent speeches and workshops on this and the related topic of Trusted Adviser have been for google, amazon, Dell, HR Magazine’s HRD Conference, The Met Commissioner’s Senior Leaders’ forum and the Premier League’s Youth Coaches.

For reviews of Consiglieri and media coverage, see: www.consiglieribook.com. Richard is due to graduate from the Meyler Campbell coaching programme in September 2016.
