Abstract
In May 1994 Michael Hoffman and Louis Elson were preparing to travel from their London base to New York for a quarterly meeting of the partners of E.M. Warburg Pincus, the largest venture capital firm in the world. At these quarterly meetings the partners reviewed each of the company's investments. As the lead investor in Remy International Limited, Warburg Pincus had helped build Remy from start-up and now needed to exit from its investment. Both men knew that their partners expected them to tell them what their investment in Remy International was worth and how they planned to realise that value.
