Abstract
This case describes Philips' corporate venturing activities. It provides background on the company and then it describes the formation of the corporate venture unit in the late 1990's. The two investment opportunities are described in detail - Spridge and URTV. In each case, Rene Savelsberg the Head of Corporate Venturing, has to decide whether to push ahead with the investment or not. There are also two follow up cases, Spridge(B) and URTV(B), each of which provides some information on what happened to the business after Philips invested. There is a further decision point in each case. This case is a good vehicle for examining the details of a corporate venturing activity. It focuses on the actual investment decisions made by Rene Savelsburg and the conflicting pressures he is under from the parent company, outside investors and entrepreneurs.
