Abstract
In early 1992, the founders of Derwent Valley Foods met to consider the future of the company. Founded by four entrepreneurs in 1982 to exploit a perceived opportunity for premium adult snacks, the company marketed under the name of "Phileas Fogg - Fine foods from around the World." Phileas Fogg snacks became essential to any 'yuppie' party in eighties London, with sales reaching £18 million in the year to March 1991. Now estimated to be worth about £16 million, the company had long been suggested as an ideal candidate for stock market flotation, and there had also been regular overtures from interested trade buyers. While there was no immediate need to float or sell, recent events had brought the issue to the forefront.
