Abstract

"Stock markets around the world are in free-fall tonight... On Wall Street shares have plunged by a third." Monday 19th October 1987, Bryan Wood, Managing Director of Alta Berkeley Associates, a London based international venture capital firm, sat amazed in front of the television as he watched the story of the day's events. Over the next few days the carnage on the world's financial markets continued. The week before he had been planning to look for a trade buyer for Centrafarm Group N.V., a Benelux-based pharmaceutical company quoted on NASDAQ National Market System in the US, in which he and two other investors had a major stake. Then the shares had been trading at over $15; they now stood below $7. The search for a buyer was placed on hold while the chaos died down. However, by late 1987, there had been little improvement in the price even though, on the face of it, the company's prospects were little changed by recent events. Wood and the other members of the investment syndicate arranged a meeting. Where did they go from here?
