“I gained the skills needed to understand the main drivers of a global PE firm, to invest in developing countries, to improve deal selection and formulate a well-timed exit. And I did it all in London, the global centre of finance.
In a world where PE and M&A activity is growing at unprecedented rates, Javier Espi is confident he’s prepared for any challenge that comes his way. “Since I completed the Masterclass in Private Equity I’m better at managing the mechanics of selecting and structuring transactions between the company and potential investors. It’s so important to have a wide range of strategies to maximise the value of a deal, to understand the legal and financial requirements, and to recognise how these things can positively or negatively impact the future track record and performance of a company,” he says.
For Javier, enrolling in the programme made perfect sense. Already in a senior role at Santander Corporate & Investment Banking, and with extensive professional experience behind him, he wanted to consolidate his existing knowledge of the PE and M&A industries. “The PE and M&A industry is so demanding and competitive that I was concerned about my own personal and professional development. I wanted a clearer view of business drivers and felt it was important to understand key trends.”
Javier also wanted the chance to learn with PE Masterclass colleagues from across Europe. Thinking back on the classroom environment, he says that in addition to exceptional inter-disciplinary faculty, the programme was an exclusive opportunity to learn with an accomplished peer group. “I worked with top executives in a supportive atmosphere, fired up over real-life PE case studies. And I’ve developed and built a strong network of international professionals from a wide range of backgrounds, geographies and profiles, all of whom are directly involved with the PE and M&A industry.”
Sharing fresh perspectives has also changed the way Javier thinks about corporate transactions. Since the programme finished, he’s collaborated successfully with classmates on a number of cross-border transactions, all of which, he says, have produced very interesting results.
Javier applauds the fact that the Masterclass in Private Equity is carefully structured, in a way that he believes has made him more strategic, and that has given him a more profitable vision of his industry. He also says that he couldn’t have found a better place to study, and that the programme is a "must do" for anyone who wants a successful career in the corporate finance and PE industry. “I gained the skills needed to understand the main drivers of a global PE firm, to invest in developing countries, to improve deal selection and formulate a well-timed exit. And I did it all in London, the global centre of finance.”
