The safety of our School community is at the forefront of all we do at London Business School.

For the 2021-22 academic year, we are reintroducing in-person learning as the primary teaching format for Degree Education programmes and for some of our Executive Education programmes, subject to government guidelines.

Last updated 16 May 2022

Your health and safety

  • What is the UK Government's latest Covid-19 guidance for higher education providers?

The UK Government’s guidance for higher education providers makes clear that there are no current COVID-19 restrictions on Higher Education.

Nevertheless, we continue to work in partnership with our Health and Safety consultants to ensure that our campuses operate as safely as possible. This includes complying with guidelines from the UK Government and the Local Health Authority and with advice from other relevant professional bodies such as the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

There is no longer a requirement to test twice-weekly for COVID-19 using a rapid lateral flow test. However, since COVID-19 can be carried asymptomatically, regular lateral flow testing remains a sensible precaution.

Free Lateral Flow tests remain available to order online for those over 12 years of age with weakened immune systems and over-75s.

Wearing a face covering indoors on our London campus is no longer mandatory.

However, we recommend that students, staff, faculty, participants and visitors continue to wear face coverings indoors and in particular when:

    • moving around in a building
    • in a lecture theatre or other teaching space
    • working in any other crowded area such as shared study spaces.

Every member of our community will have a different level of concern. If anyone asks you to wear a face covering indoors to make them feel more comfortable, we ask that you do so wherever possible.

Faculty and staff can also require that face coverings be worn when delivering teaching sessions or other programme activities. In these instances, face coverings will continue to be mandatory.

Masks remain mandatory inside the classroom at our Dubai campus, in line with Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) requirements.

  • What should I do if I am experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, or have been in close contact with someone who develops symptoms?

In England the legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive for COVID-19 or have been in close contact with someone who develops symptoms has ended. However, as with any infectious disease, we each have an important role to play in protecting ourselves and others. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 please do not attend campus until you have recovered.

  • I think I have a cold, can I still come to campus?

The legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive for COVID-19 in England has ended. However, as with any infectious disease, we each have an important role to play in protecting ourselves and others. Please do not attend campus until you have recovered.

  • What hygiene measures do I need to take while on campus?

    You should:

    • Wash your hands with soap and water often, for at least 20 seconds each time
    • Use hand sanitiser if soap and water aren’t available
    • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
    • Put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards
  • What ventilation system is in operation at the London campus?

The School’s health and safety team have worked with Mechanical and Electrical consultants to create a COVID-19 ventilation policy. You can be fully assured that all of our ventilation systems have been serviced and new enhanced measures implemented if required.

In lecture theatres, the fresh air supply is on and the additional units that recirculate air are off. In single occupancy offices, air conditioning can remain on. It will be switched off in multi-occupancy spaces. In order to increase fresh air supply, all windows should be left open if possible.

The Building Services team is continuously monitoring advice and guidelines from the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers in order to ensure we take account of any new guidance.

  • What should I do if there is a fire alarm?

Your safety is our paramount concern and so, in the event of a fire alarm,

Please leave the building immediately and go to the normal assembly point. You should remain there until further instruction.

London Campus access

  • When is the London Campus open?

Our London campus is open to students every day. Sammy Ofer Centre and North Building are open on a 24 hour basis from 07:00 on Monday to 19:00 on Friday. Sussex place is accessible at all times.

  • Are alumni allowed on campus?

Yes, alumni are welcome on campus.

Please contact alumnirelations@london.edu with any queries.

  • I am a prospective Degree Education applicant. Can I visit London Business School?

You can find out about the School, our programmes and community and get your questions answered by the Recruitment and Admissions Team through one of our online or in-person events.

Please check the Events page for the latest information or take a virtual tour. We also encourage you to connect with our Student Ambassadors, which allows for 1:1 interactions with our community.

  • Do I need to wear a face covering when visiting the London campus?

We expect anyone attending our London campus wears a face covering indoors; and in particular:

    • if you are moving around in a building;
    • if you are in a lecture theatre or other teaching space;
    • if you are working in any other crowded area such as open plan offices.

Face coverings do not need to be worn when you are outdoors around the campus.

  • Do I need to be vaccinated to visit the London campus?

The UK government has confirmed there is no requirement to provide proof of vaccination. However, we strongly encourage those eligible and able, to access the rollout of vaccines to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Getting vaccinated: If you are registered with a GP, you can book or manage your COVID-19 vaccination online. Alternatively, you may use the NHS’s online search tool to locate the walk-in vaccination sites nearest to you. You do not need to be registered with a GP to access a walk-in vaccination. Please refer to NHS England’s COVID-19 vaccination FAQs for students if you require further information.

  • Can my partner attend campus?

Yes, partners are welcome on campus.

Dubai campus access

  • Is the Dubai campus open?

Our Dubai campus remains open, subject to Dubai Government guidelines. Our Hybrid Classroom continues to operate, with virtual teaching delivered to classroom-based students thanks to the support of LBS staff on the ground in Dubai.

All students will need to abide by measures and guidelines set out by KHDA. All LBS staff and students flying in from abroad need to also present the following before attending to campus:

    • A negative PCR test with a 48-hour validity. Students that do not have a negative PCR test result with a 48-hour validity will be required to attend virtually. Students can resume on-campus learning without completing their 14-day quarantine if they produce a negative PCR test. These should be sent to askembadubai@london.edu.
    • If you are flying to Dubai, please note that PCR test results are valid for 48 hours only from the date of result. The PCR test may be completed at Dubai airport or at any approved DHA facility within the Emirate.

Due to an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases and to ensure the safety of you and your peers, UAE-based students are encouraged to present a negative PCR test too.

  • What safety measures are in place at the Dubai campus?

A rigorous cleaning regime has been developed and rolled out across campus. All areas of the campus are cleaned at an increased frequency throughout each day.

Wearing a mask is mandatory for everyone on campus. If a student has a medical condition that necessitates an exemption to wearing a face mask, student must apply for an exemption through the Dubai Police portal. Applications are typically processed within five days, and students will have to provide supporting medical documents as part of the application.

While on campus, you are required to keep two metre apart from other people in all public spaces as suggested by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), Ministry of Education (MoE). Ensure 1.5 meters distancing measure is maintained in classrooms and learning spaces.

Anyone using one of the touchdown areas must ‘check in’ using the track and trace sign-in app. Signs are displayed on each desk with instructions.

    Additional safety measures include:

    • Temperature checks at the Academy building receptions
    • Markings throughout the building to remind students of social distancing
    • Meeting room and lecture hall capacity restricted
    • Reduction in capacity of lifts and toilet/shower areas
    • Provision of hand sanitiser
    • Regular cleaning of key touch-point surfaces, including handrails, light switches and door handles
    • Additional signage and posters around School to remind the community to maintain good hygiene standards and Signposting of the direction of foot traffic
    • Installation of protective screens in areas where we can’t maintain social distancing measures
    • Safe seating arrangements in shared offices
    • Specialist equipment and training given to the School’s cleaning team to carry out deep cleaning

Classroom First (degree programmes)

  • What is Classroom First?

In-person learning was reintroduced as the primary teaching format for the 2021-22 academic year. Students who do not have special circumstances are expected to attend LBS in-person.

The primary focus of Classroom First is on live, collaborative interaction in the classroom, ideally face-to-face, but also supported by a virtual synchronous option for those whose circumstances do not permit them to be on campus. Classroom First reintroduces LBS attendance and class participation requirements.

Learning at LBS is dynamic and inclusive; students and faculty learn from each other and Classroom First enables us to maintain the fluidity of the traditional classroom to achieve this community learning approach. In-person interaction as the primary teaching format enhances engagement with course material and offers greater opportunities for connections outside of the classroom. It creates space on campus for spontaneous interactions, fosters friendships and expands networks.

  • What if my circumstances do not permit me to be on campus?

Anyone who feels they have special circumstances and are unable to join us in-person in London can apply via the relevant programme office for consideration of an exemption. This will facilitate access to synchronous online teaching that will enable them to join in-person classmates and attend teaching sessions live.

Exceptional circumstances for which an exemption may be granted include (but are not limited to):

    • travel restrictions that prevent an individual from travelling to London or Dubai
    • self-isolation
    • illness.
  • What if I have difficulty travelling to London or Dubai for Classroom First?

Anyone who feels they have special circumstances and are unable to join us in-person in London or Dubai can apply via the relevant programme office for consideration of an exemption. This will facilitate access to synchronous online teaching that will enable them to join in-person classmates and attend teaching sessions live.

Exceptional circumstances may include (but are not limited to):

    • travel restrictions that prevent an individual from travelling to London or Dubai
    • self-isolation
    • illness.

In the event of exceptional circumstances applying, remote learning and/or delivery options are available and accommodated.

  • What will happen to Classroom First if there's an outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19)?

Classroom First is expected to be primary teaching model for the 2021-22 academic year.

If there is any relevant change to UK or UAE Government guidance for higher education, the School is well-prepared to offer either a:

    • hybrid model (students may choose to attend course lectures either in-person and virtually synchronously)
    • virtual model (all course lectures delivered virtually) with minimal disruption to programme delivery.

  • When will Classroom First come into effect?

Classroom First was introduced to London-based degree programmes from the beginning of the 2021-22 academic year in August 2021.

Classroom First will be introduced in full to Dubai-based degree programmes as soon as restrictions ease sufficiently to allow its operation. In particular, we anticipate faculty travel to our Dubai campuses may continue to be affected while the UAE remains on the UK Government's red list.

  • What Classroom First arrangements are in place at the Dubai Campus?

Classroom First is in place for Dubai-based degree programmes.

The campus remains open for student to attend classes and network with their peers.

  • What happens if I am self-isolating having tested positive for COVID-19?

The legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive for COVID-19 in England has ended. However, as with any infectious disease, we each have an important role to play in protecting ourselves and others. Please do not attend campus until you have recovered.

Classes are available live online as part of the Classroom First model. Students granted an exemption to learn virtually because they are self-isolating or ill, will have access to synchronous online teaching that will enable them to join in-person classmates and attend teaching sessions live. Sessions will usually be recorded and students will have access to these. All exams are currently being delivered and completed online.

  • What if I have concerns about coming to campus?

Be assured that the safety and wellbeing of all members of our community remains a primary concern and a full programme of campus safety measures are in place.

Our approach follows the UK Government’s guidance to higher education providers, with additional input from our own health and safety consultants and input from relevant professional bodies (such as the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) where appropriate. We are regularly adapting our approach to ensure that it reflects the latest guidance.
