Copyright guidelines for London Business School Library users
Guidance on photocopying from published works, and copyright issues relating to electronic information. These pages are for information only and are in no way a statement of copyright law.
For staff and students, there's also specific information on copyright in teaching and learning in the Courses area of Portal
Copying for private study or research
When copying books and journals from the UK, you can copy:
- one complete chapter from a book
- one whole article from a single issue of a journal
- no more than five per cent of a work
whichever is the greater
For more information, see the guidelines displayed near School photocopiers, which include a list of excluded material.
Copyright issues for electronic information
Copyright protection means that you can only use electronic work - eg HTML or PDF documents, computer programs, share price graphs or files of statistical data - within the scope of the authorisation imposed by the copyright owner.
This usually means you can print/download a single copy for personal use for private study and research.
Practical implications of copyright electronic works
The following kinds of use are normally prohibited without the permission of the copyright owner:
- copying or reproduction eg making multiple photocopies of an HTML or PDF document
- distribution eg downloading a PDF file and sending it as an email attachment
- republishing eg putting a document protected by copyright on a web server for others to access
- selling eg selling a copy of an electronic work
At London Business School, licences and service agreements for commercially published electronic information are normally signed between the School and the copyright owner. These require the School's employees and students to conform to the authorisation and restriction terms.
