To apply for admission to the PhD programme at London Business School you need to complete our online application form. Applications for 2013 entry will be accepted from September 2012 until the deadline on 8 January 2013.
The form is designed to be completed over several sessions. You can save your work as you go and submit the completed form whenever you are ready.
You'll be given full instructions during the online process, but please read the information below before you begin. This will give you a better idea of how the application process works and what additional documentation you will need to provide.
To start your PhD in September 2013 you must apply before 8 January 2013.
We must have received all parts of your application by this date, including your GRE/GMAT and English language test results. We do not accept late applications.
Interviews for applicants to the MSO programme will take place in London on 26/27 February.
Interviews for other applicants will take place in February on dates to be advised.
Qualifications and academic potential
You should have a good undergraduate degree with a final grade that places you in the top 10% of your graduating class.
Most of our students have a masters degree, but this is not a requirement.
You should use this website to ensure that our research concentrations fit well with your own interests. Also familiarise yourself thorougly with our faculty profiles.
Personal motivation and maturity
You must be reflective, energetic, mature and realistic as well as highly motivated.
Our PhD students move on to academic positions in top global business schools and universities. If you do a PhD with us you should feel sure that a career in academia is for you.
When you complete your online application form, you will be asked to attach:
- two essays
- names and details of two academic referees.
- a transcript of grades from each university you have attended
You also need to arrange for us to receive:
- your GMAT or GRE score
- proof of your English Language ability.

The statements form an important part of your application, so do make sure you spend a significant amount of time on them.
You will also have the option to attach a short CV. This should be one to two pages long.
You need to give us the details of two people who can serve as your referees. They should be faculty members who know your work well and can judge your research potential - for example, previous supervisors or academic tutors.
After you input your referees' details into the online application form, we will send them an email with login details for our online reference system.
London Business School reserves the right to contact your referees for further information in connection with your application.
You must submit transcripts of grades from all colleges, universities and professional schools you have attended.
These must include:
- a list of courses completed
- degree class
- class ranking (if available).
If the original transcript is not in English, you must provide a certified or notarised English translation.
Scanned copies will be accepted with your application, but originals must be submitted if we make an admission offer to you. If you cannot submit your original transcripts, we will accept copies that have been certified by a lawyer or Notary Public.

The GMAT and GRE
Before you apply you must take either the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Scores are valid for 5 years.
Some subject areas prefer you to take a particular test.
- Management Science and Operations.
Required scores vary according to subject area, but for all subjects you should score:
- at least 650 in the GMAT, or
- above the 90th percentile in the quantitative and analytical parts of the GRE
Please arrange for your score to be sent directly to the School.

Make sure you allow enough time for the score to be processed so that you can meet the application deadline. We recommend that you take the test before mid-December. Your score is a vital part of your application and we do not accept late submissions.
English Language ability
Adequate command of spoken and written English is required for admission. If English is not your native language and you do not have a degree from a university in an English-speaking country where English was the language of instruction, you must send us your score in a recognised English test taken within the last two years. In order to allow enough processing time for your score, you must take the exam before 15 December.
