“Challenges to Transmission Expansion Planning”
Long-term Transmission Expansion Planning (TEP) consists in the selection of the optimal additions to the power transmission network and as such is one of the key strategic decisions in power systems.
Since the first optimal TEP studies in the seventies, it has been recognized that the combinatorial nature of the decision together with the uncertainties present constitutes a considerable burden for the convenient resolution of the problem. This existing complexity has been increased by relatively recent changes in power systems - namely deregulation and the advent of multinational markets, as well as certain technological advances.
