“Fairness awareness” as an extension of uncertainty management theory: How the cueing of fairness impacts decision-making
A large body of literature has documented that behavior is influenced by fairness perceptions. One popular theoretical perspective is uncertainty management theory, which suggests that individuals respond to fairness information to the extent that they are experiencing uncertainty. Within this paradigm, a number of studies have explored the various ways in which uncertainty has been conceptualized, and yet hardly any research has expressly examined another element crucial to the theory: the fairness information itself. Our study builds on the priming and automatic processes literature to suggest that cueing fairness (i.e., “fairness awareness”) provides sufficient fairness information to alleviate concerns about uncertainty. Data from an archival study and two lab experiments provide empirical support for our arguments.
