Behavioural Strategy: Past, Present, and Future
“Behavioral strategy applies cognitive and social psychology to strategic management theory and practice” (Powell et al, 2011, Strategic Management Journal, p. 1369). In 1987 I was privileged to join a selective gathering of a number of the world’s leading strategic management researchers at Boston University. This event was seminal in both my own development as a scholar and in the development of the now mushrooming wider body of work exploring the psychological foundations of the field. In this talk, I will reflect on what this work has accomplished thus far and explore what might lie ahead. Drawing on recent advances at the interfaces of economics, psychology, and neuroscience, I will demonstrate how and why a fundamental rethink is required, in order to move the strategy field away from a preoccupation with behavioural and cognitive aspects of strategy formulation and implementation, to a broader approach that accommodates the mounting evidence that emotion and less deliberative forms of cognition are central to the functioning of individuals and groups. I will conclude by illustrating the implications of my analysis for the longer term development of work that will ultimately enhance the prospects of enterprises being able to adapt successfully at what is undoubtedly a critical juncture in the development of the world economy.
