Research in Decision Sciences

Research in Decision Sciences has an applied focus, working with companies to introduce advanced methods of decision technology.

Decision Sciences research at London Business School provides a focus for innovative multi-disciplinary research on applications of new business-modelling technologies to individual and organisational decision-making. Decision Sciences undertakes collaborative research, and organises courses, seminars and symposia.

Almost all of the Decision Sciences research programmes and projects involve collaboration with business organisations, from a wide variety of sectors including financial services, utilities and manufacturing.

In addition to two established research programmes:

  • Advanced Decision Support and Strategic Modelling, where several themes of work involve the use of innovative simulation and business modelling techniques to help understand the dynamics of market behaviour and competitive strategy.

      System Dynamics Group

  • Energy Modelling, which has taken a distinctly model-based approach to the analysis of important problems of policy and planning including competition, pricing and regulation in the new energy markets, UK and worldwide.
    Energy Markets Group
    Electricity course

there are also a number of new initiatives being vigorously developed by faculty who have joined in recent years.

Faculty research interests in Decision Sciences

Current faculty research interests in DS have developed via an internationally recognised programme in energy economics in the Energy Markets Group, and a long-standing specialisation in system dynamics, in the System Dynamics Group.

Furthermore, a range of  themes have achieved prominence over the years – during the 1990s the focus was on advanced financial forecasting and neural network techniques. More recently, individual initiatives exploring operations research topics clustering around award-winning research in optimisation, related project portfolio management and airline revenue management have achieved substantial impact.
