Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM UK)

GEM UK is the world's largest single country study of entrepreneurial activity within the GEM Global consortium. In 2007 it is based on a survey of 42,700 adults of working age across the UK as well as interviews with 40 experts. This makes it more than a study of entrepreneurship. It can tell us about how much activity is going on, where that activity is, how regions across the UK compare, the types of people that become entrepreneurs and the impact that entrepreneurs have on job and wealth creation.

GEM asks people of working age whether or not they are starting up a business, whether they own or manage a business and, if they are running a business, how long they have been doing this for. From this information a figure for Total Entrepreneurial Activity in the UK is calculated – the TEA index. The TEA index measures the numbers of people who are engaged in entrepreneurial activity in the UK. It comprises of:

All the people who are setting up a business by themselves or with other people as a stand-alone activity.
All the people who are setting up a business by themselves or with other people as part of their work.
All the people who own or run a business that has not been paying salaries for more than 42 months.

The GEM UK project is much more than a monitor of entrepreneurial activity. Because the survey is so large, we can compare regions and areas of the UK and compare types of entrepreneurial activity and produce special reports on these, as with the Social Entrepreneurship Report (see below). We compare types of entrepreneurs and look at the entrepreneurial culture in the UK. Read our reports to find out more.
