Assistant Professor Nitin Bakshi gains prestigious George B. Dantzig Award for best dissertation, at INFORMS (2009)

Nitin Bakshi, Assistant Professor of Management Science and Operations, has been awarded the prestigious Dantzig Dissertation Award for his thesis "Disruption Risk Management and Supply Chain Resilience" at the 2009 Annual INFORMS Meeting in San Diego. Nitin was chosen among five finalists to receive this prestigious award for his dissertation written at Wharton under the supervision of Noah Gans and Paul Kleindorfer.

"The George B. Dantzig Award is given for the best dissertation in any area of operations research and the management sciences that is innovative and relevant to practice. This award has been established to encourage academic research that combines theory and practice and stimulates greater interaction between doctoral students (and their advisors) and the world of practice"

Dr Bakshi's research focuses on management of disruption risk in operations and supply-chain management. As part of his dissertation, he has studied how to induce supply-chain partners to co-operate and invest efficiently in building a resilient supply chain. In particular, he studied issues relevant to securing the maritime supply-chain, which faces the risk of terrorist attacks. He has co-authored papers that look at the economics of the use of container-inspection technology at domestic ports in the US, and also at international ports.
