Abstract

The Chicago Pizza Pie Factory (CPPF) was one of London’s most successful restaurants. Most days of the week, lunch and evening, people queued to get in and at the end of 1979 sales exceeded £30,000 p.w. Its American owner Bob Payton had given up his job as an advertising executive with J. Walter Thompson to open a restaurant serving the food he loved from Chicago. The first restaurant in Crown Passage, Just off Pall Mall, was opened in 1977. In 1979, following the expiration of the lease, the restaurant moved to Hanover Square. In March 1980 Bob was considering how to capitalise on his success, and what role he should have in the management of CPPF.
