The Centre is focussed on understanding the ways in which the private sector can successfully promote economic and social development. This is organised around two world class research programmes undertaken together with our regional partners in: South Africa, China, India, Brazil and many other emerging markets. This project is a part of our DRC activities.

Firm Performance and Entrepreneurship
This programme seeks to understand the determinants of private sector growth and performance, and to characterise the institutional arrangements and policies conducive to the growth of a vigorous private sector, in developing countries. The programme comprises of four inter-related projects:

  • Acquisition Strategies in Emerging Markets
  • Internationalisation of Entrepreneurial Firms from Emerging Economies
  • Internationalisation Activities and Performance of Entrepreneurial Firms in High Technology Industries in China

Technological Change, Skills and Employment
Our research programme is concerned with understanding the dynamics of adoption, diffusion and innovation within the field of Innnovation and Communication Technologies (ICT) in emerging market economies and the likely implications not just for productivity and growth but also the distributional implications. The programme is divided into three related, but self-standing, components:

  • Strategic Adaptation to a Changing Environment: the Chinese Pharmaceutical Industry
