Centre for New and Emerging Markets

Welcome to the website of the Centre for New and Emerging Markets, Development Research Centre supported by the UK Department for International Development.

The Centre for New and Emerging Markets (CNEM) was set up at London Business School in response to the growing importance of new and emerging markets from a business, public policy and research perspective. We aim to raise the quality of cross-disciplinary and policy-relevant research on new and emerging markets.

Our central objective is to promote a better understanding of the ways in which the private sector can contribute positively to development. CNEM seeks to promote such understanding through excellence in research and our research is tightly focussed on a number of key dimensions of private sector activity in developing countries. We adopt a comparative, empirical approach that places emphasis on explaining differences across countries and regions.

There are two essential and common features of our research:

  • To understand the sources of differences in comparative performance of the private sector.

  • To understand more about the ways in which public-private co-operation can best be established and to pick out in both cases the central implications for policy and, more generally, for development.
